On the meaning of Arte Motu
"Arte Motu", from Latin "ars, artis, arte"= art, and the Sicilian "motu"= shaking or motion, literally means "Art Quake".
Arte Motu Mission
Founded by a tight-knit group of artist friends in the belief that art has an organic power to bring people and nature together, Arte Motu is a non-profit community-oriented art group promoting art events in the local community. Arte Motu's mission is to elevate local art's profile, and simultaneously to promote a sense of place through art. Arte Motu artists and friends are currently working on community projects, organizing public exhibitions and events, offering workshops, scholarships, and service to local schools.
- Arte Motu was originally create by artists (local or from far) willing to explore the creative force for common art projects expressing places and times of the Wild South Coast (from Tanitas Creek to Swanton, and up to Skyline). The art produced by Arte Motu is place-based, meaning both representation of the interests and cultures of the Wild South Coast community, as well as creation of the same.
- The idea of bringing art to the area that we identify as the Wild South Coast is central to Arte Motu, which mission is to transform artistically the landscape of the area, and to build art power in order to attract people/resources here.
- Artists of Arte Motu need to stay focused on “place” to a clear and potent degree, and do things that get people to pay attention to their environment, where we live, and work, and love.
